On the cusp of 2017, we’re just starting to ascend the hype cycle for AI. Within the next year, there’s going to be a lot of VC funding spent on AI on bot building companies that will label everything with AI. Anything and everything will be called AI (like IOT, NLU, VR, Web 2.0, SAAS, and other hyped up areas of the past decade).
However, despite the hype, we’re probably not going to see any breakthroughs that are going to affect our day-to-day living for about 1,000 days. At that point, we’ll probably start seeing the cascade of AI’s benefit hit. It might look like less wait times for an Uber, cheaper airfares based on predictive purchasing, or new culinary experiences. It’s impact will be deep.
However, in 2018 or 2019, we’ll probably forget about all the hype we’re giving to AI now and will be surprised when things start to change again really quickly. Happy 2017!
