There are some reports about how the next Echo could have a touchscreen and that this could be a big departure from the original Echo. It’s not. Echo isn’t about a device — it’s about Alexa, which is the personal assistant that powers those device.
My take on the Echo as a device is that it was to seed the market for Alexa endpoints, eventually to be followed by AVS-enabled devices and potentially apps. There have already been reports of devices like Lenovo laptops that could include AVS.
Touchscreen with voice adds an interesting mix. With Google Home, you can see an advantage of commanding a screen. Maybe using touch and voice together could mean doing a few things at once?
