There’s been a lot of fuss about HomePod delivery being pushed out. It’s more of an issue with Apple’s reputation around delivering hardware than a comment on its position when it comes to ambient voice. For Apple, iPhone is king and iPhone X is the current dynasty.
HomePod may have Siri on it but it will likely be only a partial experience without an iPhone within reach. I’m thinking about the Apple Watch and how it was at first only an extension of the iPhone before it gained its own 4G modem.
Maybe we’ll see the same with the HomePod and even AirPods — that at some point they become their own device. However, Apple really wants to build an ecosystem of its own hardware. The HomePod just fills in a gap of a seamless connection between iPhones and ambient voice interactive devices. So, we can wait.
