Trigger Augmentation

One of the most annoying parts of voice interaction is when a device false rejects a trigger. It can get very frustrating and make the user think that they’re silly. Thinking ahead to a future where this type of problem is rare, there are a few technologies that could reduce false trigger.

  • Glaze tracking. If a device knows you’re looking at it, it can reduce the threshold for hearing a trigger word.
  • Presence. This is a simple one, but you’re more likely to trigger a device if you’re close to it.
  • Gesture. Waving at a device or moving more is likely to signal that you’re trying to get attention.

Beyond these, continuous speech recognition and context might help with trigger-less interaction.
